I read a story about Quentin Tarantino on The Charlie Rose Show. Quentin was having lunch with one of his hero directors... someone known for creating beautifully crafted films — and he asked him a question that had been bothering him. He said “How do you get your vision onto the screen so perfectly?” The director didn’t hesitate. He said “That’s not your job.” Your job is to get the vision into the minds of the cinematographer, the lighting director, the set designers, the people who know how to create the mood, the environment, the feeling. None of those things are your job. Your job is to describe the vision. He said that realization changed everything for him. It allowed him to relax and lean fully into the one thing he was best at. Our job is to get clear on the vision... and get really good at describing it to others who can help!

Amy Carmichael said “You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.” So true! I don't know what the context is for this quote, so I might be talking about something completely different than what Amy meant, but I know a wealthy family that instantly came to mind when I heard this quote. The grandfather gave everything he could to his family because he loved them so much. He set aside time and spent as much time as he could possibly spend with his children and grandchildren. Sadly, he passed away fairly early. His wife was a built differently. She didn't like spending time with the family. She would send checks, but they really wanted her spending her time with them, not just money, but that is all she had to give. I think this fits the quote! “You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.”

Lewis Carroll said "I can’t go back to yesterday–because I was a different person then." So true! I think of this as I go to my hometown. I absolutely loved living there. I didn't want to leave when I moved, but I was married young and I followed my wife to her new job in Iowa. We were divorced a few months later. I'm so glad I followed the path I followed though. That path is how I met Heidi. We've been together over 26 years now. Our anniversary is just before Valentine's Day. There were times when I was going through my divorce when I thought “why did I move to Iowa?” Then God answered my question with the answer... Heidi and Troy! I met my wife and her two year old son because I moved to Iowa. What would my life be like if I had not moved? I don't know... and frankly I don't care. I love the way things worked out. This is the life I chose!

Dolores O’Riordan said "I've come to the conclusion that life is for the taking and just too short to dwell on the negative." What a great quote. Life is too short. We've been to a few funerals lately... and we have a few more on the way. What a sad reminder that life is too short! Are you doing the things you wanted to do? Or do you fill your days with only the things you need to do?! If you're never getting to the things you want to do, I encourage you to shift some things to make time to do that. Even if it is only a few hours a week to start. Find some time to make your heart happy. Find some ways to flex the muscles that you want to flex... whether that's making music or painting or writing. Find your own personal outlet to satisfy the cravings. I think this will make a huge difference in your life. Try it for six months and see for yourself!

Lin-Manuel Miranda said "Because of phones, we always have the ability to jump out of ourselves. But unless you learn how to be in your head, you’ll never learn how to create." I love this. It is hard to explain to a younger generation, what a difference SMART phones have had on society. Our children have always had cellphones in their life... and they both... personally had a smart phone while they were still in high school. My generation didn't have that, We lived in an age of wonder. We would wonder things. There is no need to do that today. I can click a button and get the answer to pretty much anything. It's amazing, but it is also robbing us too. It was amazing to wonder about things. You would use part of your brain that is not used for other things. It would turn on this creativity engine that built amazing things in your mind!
